Nym - "Edge City" (www.recollectivent.com) "Edge City" is an album by Nym which is available free at www.excommence.com. It was released for free as an independant endeavor, a publicity stunt--whatever. Basically, the artist simply wanted his music to get heard. Again, "Edge City" is free. The only stipulation is that you help it spread. Send this link (http://www.excommence.com) to as many people as possible. No RIAA will approach you for downloading these songs. Nym will not sue you for putting them on P2P networks. However, please keep this file in among the others, if possible. Music has changed with the mp3. The Compact Disc is a dead medium - musicians can now put out cds online for free and profit more by drawing attention rather than running through the loops of record companies and a hundred other scissors who want a cut. Anyway, Nym, who is tired of writing in third person, hopes you enjoy these songs. I have the source files, of course, so this stuff is my intellectual property, but if your cousin raps and he wants to use one of these beats, go for it. peace to Phinneus P. Gage, 1823-1860. nym ****************************** 1 - I dreamt I was drowning shameless intro-ery, minus the dreaded word in the song's title. This one was fun to make. MPC1000, SP404, random samples + Acid & Reason. 2 - Edge City Ennn whyy emm...Peace to GMU Vinyl, MPC1000, MPD, SP404...this was a challenge to me posed from someone on the mpc-forums...make a beat someone could rap over. Hence, this song's setp - unlike many of my songs, it has a defined intro, chorus, etc...this song would be catagorized by the rap inclined as a "banger," but it's really just a song about why I RULE (unlike most rap, which is about why other people rule). 3 - John's Basement This was started on the Peace Poor War Child tour (which later the Piss Drunk Snore Child tour as the night progressed). The last night was one of great festivity. John proved he could not only rap, but cook and provide us with beer. It was good fun. I had been working on this beat all day, and eventually, freestyling was eminent. I owe thanks to John, Steve, and Adam for this song, as well as Doug and Andy. They set me on a new path. This song was composed on the MPC and Reason over the course of a whole summer. Special thanks also go out to Joseph Holmes and Mexico, for claiming my parents for three weeks. 4 - Lost Beat 1 IT'S THE 90S ALL OVER AGAIN! MPC1000 and MPC1000. Auhhhgh. 5 - 3 Penny Opera I love this song. Probably my favorite on this album. It's vibrant in a way that others are not. I sent this piece in to NYU's Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music, and as of now I still have no idea about whether or not I get in (odds are against me). Actually, 3 Penny Opera got lost early in its creation due to the OS 2.0 New Folder Bug in the mpc1000 (see more below). I realized it was too good to lose so i painstakingly recreated it, searching through 4 records to find the exact same small chops i used and combining them in the same way by memory. I'm glad I did. This song uses the MPC, sp404, MPD, Reason, and Serato Scratch Live. 6 - Bandit Tyler (Arsenic) approached me asking for a beat for his next release. I sent him 3, I think, the first two of which were not necessarily his style. Then came Thanksgiving - and a trip to New York. I threw down the wahhed vocoder you hear at the end first, then the drums (love swing) and finally the guitar, when i found the right sample. THEN, out of the blue came Kyle - Manic, beatbox master of rediculous skill - a man who can keep his cool against any odds, to lay down vocal percussion. This was the first beat i finished using the MPC1000's os 2.0, which made the machine roughly three times as capable. This was also the first beat i finished upon receiving the Sp404. It also features Serato as well as some Reason synths. THANKS Manic for your contribution, may more sweet sounds usher forth from your mouth. 7 - Ciao Hall Ciao Hall is the dining facility at george Mason universtity. I'd go there with my mpc and sit for hours, drinking terrible coffee and churning out beats. i grew accustomed to people's eating habits and recognized some of the workers. it's a nice place, but I do definitely get some weird looks. This song was composed fully within the mpc, and got some sp404 gloss while mastering. 8 - Float Thanks to the cottage, sailboats, and again, Mexico. My most sentimental song to date, suitably unfitting to me. Float was also made during the summer of 05 while my parents were in Mexico. Composed with the mpc1000, reason, and 1 instance of serato. 9 - Code Control Thanks, Steve. This is basically my audible representation of what i think steve to be, in all of the 7 days when i travelled with him. Someday, he will rap on it. meanwhile, it just calls to him... steve...steve...Anyway, Code Control was another Ciao Beat, made as the leaves had fallen and the cold was creeping up from under my feet. it was a good time, but a terrifying time simultaneously, as i was soon to find out whether or not i was kicked out of housing for a certain busted party and a certain officer Ganley. Used - mpc1000, reason, serato scratch live. Thanks, Jake, for not noticing anything missing. 10 - Lost Beat 2 Joe Holmes deserves credit for this beat, as he sat in on it and actually rapped over it. Kid is gnarly with the pen. Anyway, THIS beautiful beat was the first song i lost to the New Folder OS. I was furious - not only had i lost one of my best beats, but i had also lost something i had made for Summit. Whatever. I lived, but felt like breaking a brick wall with my head, or vice versa. Anyway, this beat was made completely on the mpc1000. ** to those who use an mpc 1000 w/ os 2.1 - CREATE YOUR NEW FOLDER BEFORE STARTING YOUR PROJECT. don't run the risk of losing your sh!t. 11 - Clockwork God MPC-Forums has beatbattles. I went up against two other fellows in this beat, tied one and beat the other. I sent it to John and he was surprised at how hard I brought it...it's nonstop aggression, relentless i'll kick your assery. I will, too. MPC1000, Sp404, Reason, Serato. It was a good time. 12 - Indecisive Tempo Another beat for an emcee. I just figured out the mpc's tempo change and abused the hell out of it. This one used the mpc, sp404, and reason. 13 - Made Flesh This is probably my opus of a song. More layers than an onion, and roughly four hundred times as funky - as long as you wait for the break. This song kicked it off for me in a way for chopping - I learned that sampling is best small. The guitar was from XXXXXXX and i just chopped it note by note and recreated a melody based on my mood and perception of what the sound should have been. There are as many drum tracks on this song as there are melody tracks - maybe more, I lost count. The switchup remains one of my proudest moments in song history to this date, and will continue to be remembered as Edge City's high point. Now, shall we dance? Mpc1000, reason, Serato Scratch live, patience, an altered mind. 14 - Lost Beat 3 Also called apartment 1. created in apartment 1, finished in apartment 1. The only beat where i started and finished the entire song in the same sitting. Minimalism can be fun, so can triplets. mpc1000. 15 - Before and After Another MPC-Forums beat battle. This one I won. The image in this song begins with a battlefield and ends with surveying the wreckage after, hence the title. It also could be extended to plastic surgery, circumcision (which is wrong wrong wrong, what god wants your forskin?) Whatever - mpc, sp404, serato, reason. Check out that basssssss solo at the end, that's all DMA, baby, Doug Emancipated the hell out of that thing... 16 - And Then It Dawned on Me That I was finished with Edge City, because I WAS. You cop outs. mpc, reason, sp404, serato, the code of a well known microsoft program in audio format. PEACE, til next time. REMEMBER!!!!!!!! PASS THIS LINK OUT - WWW.EXCOMMENCE.COM
